Fly fishing is a discipline of small details. Success often depends on a chain of minor decisions: asking the right questions, finding the most appropriate answer for the situation and adjusting as the river changes. That requires knowledge, analysis and, above all, experience.

Fly anglers tend to be meticulous. We think carefully about rods, lines, reels, flies and leaders, yet surprisingly few of us examine everything a fly fishing tippet can contribute. There is far more to the final section of a leader than colour or diameter—and more to ask than, “If the fish refuses, should I drop to 0.07 mm?” For many anglers, tippet choice is driven almost entirely by what they think the fish can see.

In practice, tippet affects turnover, presentation, leader extension, the drift, drag, the fish’s perception of the fly and, once it takes, the fight itself. Those priorities change with every technique. Fishing a large glide with a dry fly is not the same as working a small mountain stream; sight-nymphing is different from  euro-nymphing. Understanding the variables gives us better options than simply reaching for a finer spool.

 

 

Suppleness, stiffness and stretch

The way a monofilament deforms can be extremely useful. A more supple tippet is less efficient at transmitting casting energy, so it tends to land with additional curves and small piles of slack. That may sound like poor turnover, but controlled slack close to the fly is one of our best defences against immediate drag.

Stiffness matters for another reason. Air-resistant or oversized flies can twist the terminal section and leave it badly corkscrewed. Some monofilaments resist this much better than others. Material choice will not solve every problem—a smaller fly or a heavier diameter may still be necessary—but it can make a noticeable difference.

Stretch is also worth comparing. The variation between brands is considerable and personal preference plays a large part: some anglers want direct contact, while others favour a little cushioning. A tippet with controlled elasticity can absorb sudden loads and prevent breakages, especially when the rest of the outfit is relatively unforgiving.

 

Nylon or fluorocarbon tippet?

The inevitable material question is whether to use fluorocarbon. The honest answer is: it depends. Fluorocarbon offers several advantages over conventional nylon monofilament. It is harder and generally more abrasion-resistant, which can be valuable when large fish are fought around rocks, timber or other obstacles. Its greater density also helps it break through the surface film.

Its supposed invisibility underwater receives most of the marketing attention, but I find its sinking behaviour more useful in practice. Nylon can become trapped in the surface film and leave a visible trace or wake. Fluorocarbon is more willing to cut beneath it. Its additional stiffness can also reduce the corkscrewing produced by bulky flies at an equivalent diameter.

There are trade-offs. Fluorocarbon is expensive and usually stretches less, which becomes relevant at the strike—particularly for anglers who set the hook aggressively and rely on the outfit to absorb the shock. Its reputation for weaker knots is often less about the material’s linear strength than its hardness: in a poorly chosen knot, the filament can bite into itself. Knots that avoid excessive self-pressure are preferable, although every manufacturer seems to recommend a different “magic” solution.

Nylon-to-fluorocarbon connections deserve particular care. The harder fluorocarbon can cut into softer nylon, especially in very fine diameters. Avoid casual mixed-material joints at the delicate end of the leader, and test both the knot and the specific combination of materials before trusting it to a good fish.

 

How tippet diameter affects presentation

For many anglers, diameter is simply a question of whether the fish can detect the deception. Finer tippet can certainly produce a take, but I believe the reason is often misunderstood. Whether or not a trout can see the filament, it is unlikely to interpret it as “fishing line” and consciously reject a fly because it is attached to it. What fish detect far more readily is an unnatural presentation.

The real objective is to let the imitation travel as naturally and freely as possible. From that starting point, diameter becomes a mechanical tool rather than an exercise in concealment.

A thicker tippet has more surface area in contact with the water and a greater grip on the surface film. More current acts on it, more tension reaches the fly and drag begins sooner. In plain language, the imitation travels with its hands tied. A finer diameter reduces that contact and allows the fly a freer, more natural drift. It also creates less disturbance in the film, although dropping a few hundredths of a millimetre will not make the leader’s surface footprint disappear.

Below the surface, the same principle applies. Tippet diameter creates resistance as a nymph sinks and moves through the water column. A fine terminal can help a lightly weighted pattern reach depth more quickly. That is one of the few situations where genuinely extreme diameters may be justified—apart from the practical problem of threading the eye of a size 28 fly.

 

Why tippet length matters

Length is often treated as an afterthought: after changing flies ten times, the tippet becomes too short, so we replace it. In reality, length works together with diameter to reduce drag and free the fly.

Because the tippet is the final section of the leader, it must dissipate the remaining kinetic energy of the cast—the energy that tries to turn the leader over in a perfectly straight line. Do we always want complete extension? No. A fully straightened line and leader place the fly under tension from the instant they touch down, often producing immediate and dramatic drag.

Precision does not require complete extension. Presentation casts and carefully balanced tackle can put the fly exactly where it needs to be while preserving curves and slack. A longer leader and tippet are crucial here: the more length we add, the more likely the terminal is to form useful waves and folds because insufficient energy remains to straighten it completely.

That reserve of slack is especially valuable because it sits closest to the fly. It delays tension where tension matters most. By combining length and diameter, we can solve many difficult drifts without automatically choosing weaker material. Sometimes adding a metre to the leader produces a more natural presentation than reducing the tippet diameter. In another situation, a finer filament may be the correct tool for reaching depth. The fish, current and method should dictate the decision.

 

 

“Tippeting”: when going fine becomes the objective

I use the word tippeting for the posturing that sometimes surrounds ultra-fine terminal tackle. We have reached a point where there seem to be only two explanations: either anglers believe that fishing extremely fine is the only way to catch, or announcing that a fish was landed on 0.10 or 0.07 mm has become fashionable and cool.

The idea that finer always means better has harmed both fish and anglers. Too many good fish are lost after the take because a stronger, perfectly acceptable tippet was never tried. Listen to the triumphant tone of “and on 0.10, too!” and thin diameter begins to sound like an extra achievement—as if a fifteen-minute fight were part of the trophy.

I would go so far as to say that most fish we land are caught on a diameter finer than they would tolerate. That matters if we claim to care about them. How long can a fish fight before its chances of survival decline? How many flies must we leave in fish before reconsidering? There are exceptional moments when 0.10 mm is the only route to a take, but they should remain exceptional. Starting opening day with it already tied on, losing half the decent fish hooked or adding several avoidable minutes to every fight is difficult to justify.

When a strong fish is likely to test both our judgement and our tackle, we should also consider whether the chosen diameter gives us a realistic chance of landing it. Do not assume the fish will accept the fly only on the finest material in the vest. The route to that diameter must be dictated by the fish and the conditions, not by habit or status.

The heaviest tippet on which we can obtain a confident take gives us a better chance of landing the fish and making the photograph. More importantly, it allows a shorter, less traumatic fight and a stronger recovery. Choosing fly fishing tippet is therefore not only a presentation decision; it is also part of responsible catch and release.
