This project is a collaboration between Focus on the Fly, Soca Fly, and Soca Valley Tourism Department. At the foot of the Julian Alps, Slovenia hides two jewels of singular beauty. Their turquoise and green colors, and their pure waters, stand out against the backdrop of deep valleys of exuberant nature. In these waters dwell trout with marbled livery. We are in the land of marble trout. We are in the Soça and Idrijca rivers.

Together in this region, there are approximately 150 km of fishable waters, divided into 9 distinct rivers. The possibilities they offer are endless, with an unmanageable range of scenarios where different modalities, techniques, and strategies can be put into practice. This makes it a perfect destination for fly fishing enthusiasts, whatever their priorities, tastes, and skills may be.

It’s not easy to find a fishing destination in the world where we can go in less than half an hour from tempting with terrestrials the pure and elusive marble trout that inhabit the highest zones of the tributaries, to fishing with streamers and heavy lines for some of the enormous marble trout in the lower zones, which can reach double-digit weights. Of course, nymph fishing in its various modalities will also have its moments and scenarios, especially in the months at the beginning and end of the season.

The Soça River is a generous river, with abundant flow even in the summer months. It alternates large pools with deep canyon pools and fast currents. Above all, its turquoise blue waters stand out over a white bed, where rainbow trout and elusive marble trout abound. Deceiving them will be quite a challenge!

In contrast, its brother the Idrijca changes its attire to an intense, sometimes mysterious green. More gentle than its neighbor, somewhat less flowy and with somewhat warmer waters, in the Idrijca we will find great opportunities for dry fly and nymph fishing for rainbow trout, marble trout, hybrids, and grayling. The evening rises in the summer months are a spectacle that will make us lose track of time.

In the shadow of these two mythical watercourses, the angler eager to explore will find a multitude of small rivers and streams to get lost in. With low flow and abundant gradient, they are perfect scenarios for those who are not afraid to venture into isolated valleys and overcome all kinds of obstacles and elevations. With very healthy wild populations of small marble trout, very receptive to dry fly fishing, we should never rule out a surprise and will have to scrutinize every inch in the depth of each pool. Sometimes, the adventure has its reward in the form of an old marble trout.

Slovenia is a magical country that gifts the visitor an experience that goes far beyond fishing: immense hospitality, virgin landscapes, pure rivers… A thousand moments that will endure in memory. Fishing is much more than catching fish, and there is no doubt that the angler who visits Slovenia will leave with the feeling of having left a piece of themselves in the waters of these wonderful rivers, at the foot of the Julian Alps.
